西本願寺（にしほんがんじ Nishi Honganji）は、京都市下京区にある浄土真宗本願寺派の本山。
西本願寺は通称であり、正式名称は「龍谷山 本願寺」。京都市民からは「お西さん」の愛称でも親しまれている。真宗大谷派の本山である「東本願寺」（正式名称「真宗本廟」・下京区）と区別するため、両派の本山は通称で呼ばれることが多い。
境内は、国指定の史跡で、「古都京都の文化財」として世界遺産にも登録されている。
本願寺住職が浄土真宗本願寺派の門主となる。
2011年4月9日より2012年1月16日まで、本願寺御影堂において親鸞聖人750回大遠忌法要が修行予定である。
Nishi Hongan-ji (西本願寺 Nishi Hongan-ji?) or the "Western Temple of the Original Vow", is one of two temple complexes of Jodo Shinshu inKyoto, the other being Higashi Honganji (or "The Eastern Temple of the Original Vow"). Today it serves as the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu organization.[1]
Nishi Honganji was established in 1602 by the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu when he split the main Honganji in Kyoto in two (Higashi Honganji being the other) in order to diminish its power.[1]
Nishi Hongangi is located on Horikawa St. west of Higashi Honganji temple. It is older than the latter and has more integral architecture.[1] It is also listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.（wikipediaより）
